"Family Fun Night" and "Charlotte's Web" — now set for July 15

Among other activities, the night will have games, a DJ and a movie.

Residents are invited to gather the kids and come to Harry Dunham Park on Thursday, July 15  for an evening of Family Fun – a day later than originally planned.

There will still be carnival games, a DJ, and relay races. And to top off the evening when the sun goes down, the movie "Charlotte's Web."

Family Fun Night is part of the Wednesday Night Movies & Games in the Park Program (though it'll now place on Thursday, the event's rain date), which is sponsored by the Department of Parks & Recreation. The department's summer staff camp staff will be conducting and supervising the event. The games begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by the movie at 8:45 p.m.

Who doesn't remember the heartwarming story of a little girl, Fern, her pet pig Wilbur and a clever little spider, Charlotte. A must read for most elementary school children, the book, "Charlotte's Web," by E.B. White, was first published in 1952 and became an international award winning children's classic.

"Charlotte's Web," the movie (G rated), premiered in 2006 and is the second movie to portray the story (the first movie opened in 1973). This movie combines live action acting with computer animation. Dakota Fanning plays Fern and Julia Roberts lends her voice to the part of the computer animated spider Charlotte.

Fern has raised Wilbur as her pet, having convinced her father not to do away with the little runt piglet. Wilbur becomes a full-sized pig, however, and a target for a neighbor's (the Zuckermans) future dinner. An unlikely alliance develops between the spider, Charlotte (who lives in the Zuckerman's barn), Wilbur and Fern, as they seek to save Wilbur from such a horrible fate.

Charlotte, with the help of the other barnyard animals, uses her web-spinning talents to persuade the Zuckermans that Wilbur is really a very special pig and should not be used for dinner.

Viewers will learn a lot about friendship and a little about spiders; maybe spiders aren't so scary after all.

Bring a blanket or lawn chairs for seating.

Note on your calendar that the following Wednesdays will include Family Game Night with Wii Sports (July 21) and the movie "Monsters v. Aliens" (July 28).

Editor's note: The above is a slightly amended version of a story originally published on Basking Ridge Patch June 8, updated to include the event's new date of July 15.
