Where to Find Good Eats and Drink for Your Super Bowl Party

Still time to order. Wine stores note most popular brews.

Buffalo wings, pizza, chips and dips, giant sub sandwiches — what are your favorite foods to serve on for Super Bowl Sunday?

Everyone knows that BIG food is a BIG deal for the BIG game. Whether you are putting together a spread yourself or contributing to a pot luck, local food stores, restaurants, and wine stores are standing by to help. We even included a township caterer who can provide healthy (but tasty) options for your game get-together. Not to mention places to buy (all kinds of) beer and other libations.

The in Dewey Meadow Village is a convenient place to pick up hot and cold prepared foods. Its extensive “Entertaining Guide” offers a wide variety of choices. According to store manager Jules Leopold, the No.1 Super Bowl item is always the Buffalo chicken wing platter. Customers can order these popular wings as hot & spicy or with the more traditional barbecue flavor. Both small ($19.99) and large ($39.99) platters are available and feed 6-8 or 10-14 respectively.

Leopold said other perennial Super Bowl munchies include sub sandwiches, fried chicken, and fruit and vegetable platters. He recommends that customers order one to two days ahead, but stated last-minute orders are always welcome. Sunday hours are from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Call 908-991-0004.

The local Supermarket in the Lyons Mall will be giving customers a sample of some of its game-friendly goodies until 6 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., said store manager Troy Kotch. Shoppers still planning their menu can sample cocktail franks, guacamole and three-layered dip during those hours, Kotch said.

Stop & Shop offers three-foot subs, chicken wing platters, shrimp platters, Super Bowl cakes and cookies, Kotch said. To help set the atmosphere, shoppers can pick up Steeler, Packer or general Super Bowl balloons, he said. The supermarket still is taking orders into the weekend, he said on Friday afternoon.

Eating healthy

Looking for healthy and home-made for your Super Bowl menu? Basking Ridge-based “Soup is On” is featuring its signature Pulled Pork ($12/container) and 1 Point Chili ($11/container). Containers provide three to four servings, said owner and chef Robin Oas.

Oas said she typically prepares her fresh, low fat soups and entrees every Monday. This week, however, she will be at the stove on Friday whipping up her two Super Bowl specialities for Friday evening and Saturday morning and afternoon pickups. The Pulled Pork is a family secret recipe made with lean pork, slow simmered in a sweet and tangy sauce and hand pulled. Oas suggests serving it on buns or rice. For a low carb alternative, pair it with a side serving of steamed veggies, she advised.

Robin’s 1 Point Chili is a play on a Weight Watchers recipe, but gussied up with lots more vegetables, making it even more healthy and hearty. Call or email Robin Oas with your order  908-342-4800.

There are plenty of places to pick up those top contenders to provide the perfect match-up for a Super Bowl game: Pizza and beer.

Patch also compiled a in the area to watch the game with a crowd in public.

Something to wash it down with

owner Victor Vyas said customers planning their Super Bowl spreads seem to be favoring beer from microbreweries, including the popular Brooklyn, Magic Hat and River Horse (from New Jersey) brews.

Customers also are picking up "fun" wines such as Malbec varietals from Argentina and Morgan Sauvignon Blanc, Vyas said.

Mike DiFabrizio, owner ofin The Hills, said he expects many customers to start shopping for their Super Bowl parties on Friday evening.

The Super Bowl brings out the traditionalists for some party planners, he said. Customers have been buying basic brews such as Bud, Miller and Corona beer, he said. As for himself, DiFabrizio said he will be enjoying wine and bourbon on Sunday.

Sweet rewards in the end zone

For those with sweet tooths towards the end of the game, the A&P is selling adorably decorated football cakes and cupcakes.  Add assorted ice cream, sauces and toppings and “make your own Sundaes” for a Super Bowl Sunday.
