Heavy snow is expected to fall starting late tonight and into Saturday. The National Weather Service predicts anywhere between four and eight inches of snow, with potential for higher amounts in some locations.

"The snow should fall heavy at times, which when combined with strong northerly winds, may produce areas of blowing and drifting snow. This may cause dangerous travel conditions Saturday and Saturday night," said the National Weather Service emergency alert report.

The report also mentioned strong winds, sleet and ice, making travel "very hazardous or impossible."

The storm is the result of a low-pressure system developing across from the northern portion of the Gulf of Mexico. The storm will move up to the North Carolina coast by Saturday morning and into the Canadian maritimes by Sunday. Snow is expected to fall over a wide area.
