USGA Museum Hosts "More Than A Game" African-American Golf History Symposium

Join pioneers of African-American golf history during the
unveiling of the United States Golf Association (USGA) Museum’s newest exhibit,
“More Than A Game,” on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 10 AM to 5 PM EST.

“More Than A Game” focuses on how the creation of
African-American golf clubs positively impacted the community, despite the
pervasive prejudice and racism of the Jim Crow era. The exhibit’s centerpiece
is the story of William “Bill” Powell and the Clearview Golf Club. Founded in
1946 in East Canton, OH, Clearview is the only public golf course in the United
States designed, built and owned by an African-American. Its existence is a
testimonial to the vision, determination and integrity of Powell, who overcame
numerous obstacles in the pursuit of his dream.

Artifacts that chronicle Bill Powell’s life are featured
in the exhibit, so that visitors will learn about his humble beginnings, his
introduction to golf and the profound impact the game had on his life. In
addition to the artifacts, a short film produced by Dan Levinson of Moxie
Pictures will be shown on a continuous loop in the exhibit area to entertain
and engage visitors with this inspiring story of passion and social justice.
