The Somerset Hills YMCA sponsors Volunteer Recognition Night to enable local volunteer organizations to recognize their own outstanding volunteers, according to a news release from the organization.

The award is named the Millicent Fenwick Civic Award because Fenwick, American fashion writer, politician, diplomat and Bernardsville resident, was the award's first recipient.

According to the announcement of the award from the YMCA, Fenwick best represents the service that the award recognizes, which is "appreciation of meritorious leadership and service representing the highest ideals of the YMCA."

Award criteria focus on a volunteer who gives meaningful service to the local, national and world communities; who demonstrates extraordinary leadership; who exemplifies caring, honesty, respect and responsibility; and, who has been committed to her/his volunteer efforts for a significant length of time.

“The event provides organizations the opportunity to honor their own volunteers, share in the community’s spirit of volunteerism and learn about one another’s groups and volunteer programs”, said Sylvia Velez, Director of Volunteer Services at the YMCA.
