Moms, this is your week to take center stage.
This column always makes an effort to reach out also to dads, grandparents and sometimes even anyone who has parents. All of you have mothers you might want to remember in a special way.
But this week goes out especially to mothers. For many (lucky) people, no one will do for you what a mother does. You know that. So remember to say it this week!
(Who else would have made me a Betsy Johnson dress from a pattern with 18 pieces for the arms?)
We also are asking you to think about what Mother's Day memories are most special to you, as a mother. It might be the first year you WERE a mother. Whether our kids believe it or not, we weren't born as mothers, and the first year we were the recipients of Mother's Day gifts and cards may have been wonderful but...also a bit strange.
What were your favorite Mother's Day gifts? One of my best is a cool red cat pin that my son picked out for me when he was about three years old. He liked cats more than I did, but I still wear that pin sometimes.
My favorite Mother's Days may not even have been on the actual holiday. It was such a thrill on those times when I had four generations together — my grandmother, mother, me and then children. I knew even as those special times were taking place that they were moments to treasure!
Of course, Mother's Day also can bring up memories of loss — or disappointment for one reason or another. This sometimes is a day to reflect, as well as enjoy.
Please let us know what you are thinking this Mother's Day — and maybe what you will do. Whatever you plan or wherever you are, we salute you this weekend for a job that isn't for the faint-hearted. (But you figured that one out soon enough, didn't you?)
Please note I will not be at Starbuck's as usual at this time.
Please comment in the section below and let us know what's on your mind.
