Cops: Angry Dunkin' Donuts Customer Threw Hot Coffee On Employee

Customer says drink included cream instead of milk.

A mistake on a drink order led to a heated exchange and eventual simple assault charge and arrest at Dunkin' Donuts on 413 King George Road last week, police said.

According to a Bernards Township Police report released on Tuesday, Sonya Almonte, 33, of Somerset, ordered a hot coffee with milk shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Bernards Township Police officers responded to the scene after Almonte allegedly threw the coffee on a Dunkin' Donuts employee. Officers interviewed both parties involved.

Almonte reportedly told police that after placing her order, she left the store before realizing the coffee contained cream instead of milk. She said she then re-entered the store and pushed the cup toward an employee, accidentally spilling its contents.

The employee disagreed with Almonte's account, saying that when Almonte came back in the store, she threw the coffee because she was upset that it was not as ordered.

A police review of the surveillance tape in the store confirmed the employee's account, determining that Almonte intentionally threw the coffee at the employee, police said. Almonte was placed under arrest, charged with simple assault and release on her own recognizance.

Those convicted of simple assault in New Jersey can be punished by imprisonment for up to six months, fined up to $1,000 or both, according to New Jersey state law.

The Dunkin' Donuts employee refused medical attention at the scene of the crime, according to the police report.
