Crime Down Slightly in Bernards Township in 2011

State uniform crime report notes slight dip in crime from 2010.

Bernards Township already had a relatively low number of crimes, and crime rate, in 2010, but the number further dipped slightly in 2011, according to the latest release of the New Jersey State Police uniform crime report.

The total number of crimes reported in the township for 2011 was 138, down from 149 in 2012, according to the report.

That caused the crime rate per 1,000 residents to dip from 5.6 to 5.2 during the year, according to figures from the report.

That put Bernards as the third lowest crime rate in Somerset County, behind Peapack-Gladstone (3.3) and Rocky Hill Borough (4.4).

The rate was similar to that in Bernardsville (5.4) and a little under Bedminster (6.4).

During the year, the number of non-violent crimes in Bernards dipped from 146 to 133; the number of violent incidents was up from three to five.

The report said that during 2011 there were no murders in the township, but one reported rape, two robberies and two reported instances of aggravated assault.

The previous years there had been two robberies and one incident of aggravated assault reported, according to the state's compiled figures.

The county's highest reported crime rate per 1,000 residents was Watchung Borough, at a figure of 67.9, followed by Bound Brook, with a reported crime rate of 26 incidents per 1,000 residents.
