Bernardsville Court Date Moved in SWAT Case

The municipal court date has been moved back two weeks until later in August for Samuel J. Medway, and other authorities.

Medway, who had been living at Anderson Hill Road, where law enforcement convened on the evening of June 7, is now scheduled to appear in Bernardsville municipal court on Aug. 20 to answer the complaint, a court employee in borough hall said on Thursday.

Medway is scheduled at appear at 10:30 a.m. on that date before Municipal Judge Robert Schaul, the employee said. The court date previously was set for Aug. 6.

Medway, 44, was arrested following the standoff, during which police initially believed he may have been holding another person hostage at his home on Anderson Hill Road in Bernardsville, authorities said. He later was found to be alone, according to authorities.

Authorities at the scene also expressed the concern that Medway may have been armed. At the time, Medway was facing a separate indictable offense following an arrested in 2011 for which was pending trial in July.

The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office announced that Medway was found guilty on July 17 of charges stemming from the accusation that he sold an Uzi and ammunition to an undercover officer in 2011.

As a result of the June incident, Medway was facing charges of obstruction of justice and a disorderly person offense, Capt. Jack Bennett, of the proseuctor's office said on June 8. He added there was no further investigation into the charges at that time.

Authorities had said in June that attempting to serve Medway with a Medway ended up at about 9:50 p.m. that night, before he was transported to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office and was then lodged in the Somerset County Jail, according to authorities at the scene and the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office.

Bernardsville Police Chief Kevin Valentine said last month that borough police were not investigating further, or planning to file additional charges at that time. However, he said the case will not be closed until adjudicated in court.
