Police: Customer Punches Attendant, Gets Away With Full Tank of Gas

Attendant injured in strong-armed theft.

An Exxon gas station attendant on Kings Road was assaulted when he tried to stop a customer from getting away with a full tank a gas without paying, Bernards Township Police said.

The attendant told Bernards Police that the driver of a newer model silver Acura SUV asked to have the gas tank filled Tuesday at about 5:30 p.m. Immediately after the tank was filled, the attendant said the driver began to drive away, police said. The attendant grabbed onto the vehicle near the door, at which time the driver punched the attendant on the forearm.

The attendant was knocked away from the vehicle when his body struck a gas pump as the driver accelerated away from the pumps, police said. The vehicle then drove off south on King George Road, police said.

The attendant stated that he experienced a minor sensation of pain in his forearm where he was punched, but otherwise did not report any other injuries, police said.

The attendant was able to provide a license plate number. Police believe that the number belongs to a Florida license plate that had been reported stolen from a different vehicle in Piscataway on June 27. The value of the gas stolen is $56.
