Police: Rear Passenger Killed in I-78 Crash

Passenger involved in Bernards Twp. crash on Saturday night was ejected from crashed vehicle, police say.

An 18-year-old passenger died Saturday night in Bernards Township after the driver apparently drove off Interstate 78 eastbound and struck a number of trees on the median, according to state police from Somerville barracks.

According to police, the accident occurred around 10 p.m. Saturday night and involved a vehicle traveling eastbound on the highway near mile-marker 33.7.

Information available earlier was that the driver had been killed.

However, information from state police on Monday is that the passenger sitting in the rear right of the vehicle, Asia Keith, 18, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered a fatal head injury. The woman was transported to an unspecified hospital before being pronounced dead, state police said.

State police on Monday morning said that the driver, Keston Lambert, 24, from Brooklyn, N.Y., apparently was unable to maintain the direction of his vehicle, and for reasons unknown drove off to the left. The accident remained under investigation on Monday morning.

Lambert suffered unspecified injuries in the accident, while the front seat passenger, Angela Humphrey, with no further information available, was uninjured, according to state police.

Updated information from state police on Monday is that only one vehicle was involved in the accident.

Further details from the accident weren't released by police initially as the investigation is still ongoing.

The accident resulted in the closure of the left lane of highway.
