Fatal Bike Accident Thursday in Far Hills

Far Hills police say Bedminster bicyclist died of his injuries.

A 52-year-old bicyclist from Bedminster died from his injuries on Thursday afternoon when he lost control, struck a truck heading in the opposite direction, and then hit a tree along Pennbrook Road in Far Hills, borough police reported.

The bicyclist was Leonard S. Krupat, 52, from Revere Drive in Bedminster Township, said Far Hills Police Chief Ken Hartman.

Far Hills Police Officer Fred Ryan and emergency medical personnel responded within minutes to a report of a bicyclist down and unresponsive at 1:24 p.m. on Thursday, according to Hartman.

"Upon investigation and witness statements, it was determined that Krupat was riding his bicycle down Pennbrook Road [in] Far Hills at a high rate of speed," the chief reported.

The police report said Krupat apparently crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic, losing control and striking a vehicle traveling the opposite direction on Pennbrook Road. Krupat the left the roadway with his bicycle and struck a tree, according to the police report.

The driver of the truck, Francisco Gonzalez, of Bernardsville, apparently attempted to avoid Krupat by veering off the road to the right but the cyclist struck the rear of his pickup bed, according to the police report.

The investigation into the accident was assisted by the Somerset County Animal Response Team and the N.J. State Medical Examiners Office, the report said.
