Cops: Intoxicated Pa. Man Escorted Across State Line

Bernards police say they had hard time contacting someone to pick up man allegedly found intoxicated at Martinsville Exxon on Sunday morning.

A 45-year-old Pennsylvania man needed to be escorted to the state line after he was found at a Bernards Township gas station intoxicated and then became disorderly Sunday morning, police said.

say they tried to help the man who allegedly was in an "extremely intoxicated" condition when picked up at the Martinsville Road Exxon about 6 a.m., police said. However, the man tried to refuse their help, police said.

Police said John Miller, 45, of Port Carbon, Pa., eventually was taken by police to a bus station in Easton, Pa.

According to a township police report, Officer Alex McKnight observed a "highly intoxicated" man early Sunday morning at the gas station near exit 33 off Interstate 78, and brought him back to headquarters with the intention of helping him to arrange a ride home.

However, once back at headquarters, Miller was "not cooperative," police said. As police attempted to seek a contact person, the man allegedly began shouting profanities and was unable to initially provide the name of someone who would retrieve him, police said.

Eventually, according to the police report, the officer was able to locate a person who agreed to meet Miller at a bus station closer to his home in Pennsylvania. By that time, the man had received a disorderly person summons, according to township police.

Police then escorted and transported Miller to Easton, where he was assisted in obtaining a bus ride. By that time, hours after he had first been picked up, Miller was more sober, according to township Police Lt. Stephen Elder.

Elder said police never learned how Miller had arrived at the Exxon station.
