Police: Marijuana Arrest, Reported Gas Theft

The following information was obtained directly from the Bernards Township Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

report they received a complaint Monday of the theft of $40 worth of gas from a local station. A marijuana arrest also took place on Friday following a motor vehicle stop on Interstate 78, police reported.

Township police said they received a call Monday at about 10:40 a.m. from a gas station attendant at the on King George Road, reporting a theft of gas.

The attendant told police that a man had requested $40 worth of gas, and then fled from the gas station as the station employee was removing the gas nozzle from the man's vehicle, the police report said.

The individual is described as a white male, 25 to 30 years of age, with a slender build and short black hair, police said. The vehicle is described as a silver four-door sedan of a newer make, with New Jersey license plates, police said.

The car was seen heading south on King George Road after the alleged theft, police said.

Township police also reported the arrest of a 21-year-old Hillside man on charges of marijuana possession and motor vehicle violations following a stop along I-78 Friday at about 1:15 p.m.

Township police said the man, Jared Browne, was charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, failure to maintain car lamps, improper/fictitious plates and failure to inspect the vehicle.

After pulling over the vehicle, Matthews approached Browne and allegedly detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, the police report said.

Matthews requested and was granted consent to search the vehicle, according to police.

The search allegedly turned up a bag of marijuana located in the car's glove compartment and a bag of marijuana from under the passenger seat, the police report said.

Browne was arrested, transported to headquarters, processed and released on his own recognizance, the police report said.
