Traffic Snarled For Hours After Rush-Hour Truck Fire

No serious injuries reported, but delays for hours on I-78 westbound near exit 33.

State police from Somerville reported that efforts were still underway tonight at about 7:40 p.m., to clear a tractor trailer that had earlier caught fire from a lane on Interstate 78 westbound near exit 33. A long line of traffic remained backed up at 8:30 p.m.

Police communications had earlier reported that the cab of the truck caught fire at about 5 p.m. A tanker was requested at the scene at that time.

No one was seriously injured in the mishap, according to state police. However, a spokesman for Somerville barracks said that one lane remain closed hours after the fire was reported, while emergency workers were heading to the highway.
