YMCA Picnic & Flag Day Run Put Off Due to Heat

Combined events to celebrate Somerset Hills YMCA's 60th anniversary and Flag Day 5K benefit rescheduled until Sept. 24, according to YMCA.

After consultation with the local police department and emergency squads, the announced that Thursday evening's planned "backyard picnic"and Flag Day 5K race has been canceled due to the day's excessive heat.

The picnic, open to all in the community, had been scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. this evening, Thursday. The Flag Day 5K run, an annual event that benefits Community Hope's transitional program for homeless veterans, had been set to start at 7 p.m.

"We are all naturally disappointed and have tentatively rescheduled this event for Saturday, September 24, when we can all enjoy a community event in comfort," said Andrea Williams, spokeswoman for the YMCA on Mount Airy Road.

Williams said more details will soon be released. "Thank you for your understanding."

Williams said the YMCA's concern for the safety and well-being of participants and visitors "must come first."

She added the air-conditioned facility will remain open until 10:30 p.m. on Thursday.
