Denise Szabo, for Bernards Township, has been appointed as secretary of the Municipal Clerks Association of New Jersey, it was announced at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.
Szabo, Bernards Township clerk since 1996, said she had applied for a vacancy in the position of secretary of the 794-member organization. Once appointed, she said the officers in the association generally move up to eventually become president.
Szabo said the goal of the association is to promote professionalism, provide education and to promote uniformity in procedures in the state's municipalities. The association is made up of municipal clerks, deputy clerks and some county clerks from throughout the state, she said.
The mission of the MCANJ also is to provide training for municipal clerks and to promote a better understanding of the official duties and obligations of its members, she added later.
Szabo said she was appointed to fill a vacancy on the executive board and will serve as the MCANJ Secretary for the 2012 term. "I will hold this office until the end of the year and then continue up the chairs in subsequent years," she added in a later email.
"I am excited about serving on the MCANJ executive board," she said in the email. "I believe in the MCANJ mission and hope that my 20 plus years of experience as the Bernards Township Municipal Clerk will have a positive impact on our membership."
Szabo said she has worked for the since 1987. Before becoming clerk, she held various part time and temporary positions, including a job with the Parks and Recreation Department, and in positions as secretary to the Board of Adjustment, Environmental Commission, Pool Commission and Sewerage Authority.
