Proposed Mosque Views By Twp. Committee Candidates [VIDEO]

Liberty Corner religious center was one of the issues discussed at a Bernards Township Committee candidates forum.

Bernards Township Committee candidates Carolyn Gaziano and John Malay, both Republican incumbents, and Democratic challengers David Ferdinand and Michael Komondy answer a public forum question about their opinion on a proposed mosque in Liberty Corner.

The forum was held at Ridge High School on Oct. 18, hosted by the Ridge Empowerment for Political Participation Club, and moderated by Terri Thompson of the League of Women Voters of Somerset County.

Hearing on mosque proposal due to continue before Planning Board on Thursday night

The third public hearing on the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge's proposed mosque on Church Street in Liberty Corner is due to come before the township Planning Board at some point during the 7:30 p.m. meeting scheduled for Thursday night.

Patch already has presented videos opening and closing statements by the Democratic candidates and also the Republican incumbents.

The four candidates are competing this November for two three-year seats on the Bernards Township Committee. The five-member committee currently is all Republican.

Wow. Not that I would ever consider voting for those dems - but - bad answers. The fact that this application is a permitted use is outrageous. All surrounding towns consider such an application under their conditional use standards - so the board can consider impact on neighborhood, home values, traffic, and compatibility.I read about the passing of the 1992 ordinance in the 9/20/12 Bernardsville News - the intent of the ordinance was to DISCOURAGE houses of worship from building in Liberty Corner. ALL houses of worship. Google the article - the Hindu temple, Presbyterian Church, and Grace Fellowship were ALL affected by the ordinance. However, they were HONEST about the amount of space and parking they'd need - so they all went elsewhere. ISBR is NOT being honest about projected growth - for some reason, they insist on wedging themselves between two private homes on the quiet end of Church Street. WHY?

"Not that I would ever consider voting for those dems - but - bad answers." Are you trying to say the incumbents answers were bad answers?

No - sorry for the confusion - I could have stated that more clearly. I did not like the Democrat candidates answers: it is a fait accompli and the comparison to a little league field.
