Bernards Township 250th Anniversary Magazine Coming to Your Mailbox

Publication celebrates birthday with historic photos and information.

Township residents should soon receive copies of a free publication, the Bernards Township Anniversary Magazine, to commemorate the township's 250th anniversary celebration this year.

Members of the 250th anniversary task force said the magazine is being mailed to township households, and some copies already have arrived.

The magazine addresses the history of many local buildings that have gone on to more current uses, the township's fire companies and rescue squads, schools and other features of community life.

One article recalls the role that Bernards Township played during the American Revolution. "Basking Ridge was also the site of a hospital (on what is now North Maple Avenue) for smallpox victims in the Army, which was living in pitiful conditions at Jockey Hollow," south of Morristown.

Deputy Mayor John Malay produced the editorial content and supplied photographs for the magazine, created in coordination with the 250th anniversary task force and other local, county and state officials.
