Contractor Hired To Pave Six Roads

Work planned for completion this summer.

A Somerville contractor has been hired for $518,906 to pave six township roads this summer as part of the municipal 2011 road improvements plan, to include Dayton Street, Hillside Terrace between Dayton Street to Allen Street, Lee Place, Allen Street, Emily Road and Owens Court.

Along with the planned reconstruction of Mountain Road, the paving of the six streets will complete most of the municipal road work projects planned for this year, said Valerie Spies, assistant township engineer.

The Township Committee on Tuesday hired Top Line Construction Corp. of Somerville to perform the paving projects. Most of the roads are in a neighborhood just north of downtown Basking Ridge, between West Oak Street and North Finley Avenue.

When the committee previously awarded a contract in May for the reconstruction of the entire length of Mountain Road, officials said local road work is expected to begin after school lets out.

Spies on Thursday said the township anticipates having all road work completed by the end of August before school begins again.

At this point, she said, the township engineering department anticipates the road repaving under the road improvements contract awarded this week to be completed in July, and Mountain Road to be finished in August. However, those dates may be subject to change based on scheduling considerations, Spies said.

The $451,000 worth of improvements to Mountain Road involve the reconstruction of the entire length of the road, Township Administrator Bruce McArthur said last month.

Of that amount, the state Department of Transportation in February announced it would reimburse the township with a  for the project.

In March, the Township Committee  for various road and walkway improvements for the next year, including up to $550,000 for the Mountain Road project. The township will not borrow money for the road projects, McArthur said, but instead has set aside money for capital improvements in each year's budget.
