County Plans Overnight Paving on Allen Road

Invest in earplugs, or expect to pull at least one all-nighter during road work.

It wasn't on the books for this year, but an unexpected opening in Somerset County's work schedule means that the county road department has time to repave Allen Road in The Hills this fall, possibly in September, township officials said.

But since school will be open by then, and commuters will be busy traveling the main artery through the development with thousands of homes, the county had decided to best time to do the road work is at night — all night.

On Tuesday, the Township Committee approved a requested waiver from the municipal noise ordinance that will allow the repaving to take place between the hours of 8 p.m. until 5:30 a.m.

With good weather, the county road department expects to complete the job within four or five nights, Township Engineer Tom Timko told the Township Committee.

The portion of the road to be milled and paved would begin at the intersection of Allen with Somerville Road and continue over the crest of the hill, Timko said. Timko said he believes the road work will continue down into Bedminster.

Rich Lazicky, who is in charge of the construction division for the Somerset County engineering department, said on July 15 that the repaving project has been extended into Bedminster, to the bottom of the hill at the Route 287 north on ramp.

Generally, county road workers remove old pavement and mill the road and then repave that section before moving on to the next.

"Most folks will only be disturbed for one night," Timko said.

Deputy Mayor John Carpenter said the concession is worth in order to take up the county's offer to do the job this year. "Let's strike while the iron is hot," he observed.

The noise ordinance waiver was approved unanimously by Township Committee members.
