Nature Events for All Ages at Environmental Education Center

Lickety-Split Rabbits, Hawkwatch hikes,1770s Living History Festival and more.

The Somerset County Park Commission's Environmental Education Center has scheduled the following naturalist-led programs to encourage children and adults to enjoy the wonder and the beauty of nature as fall officially arrives in Somerset County. The EEC provides programs year-around.

Mini-Mammals—Thursday, Sept. 30 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Children ages 2 to 3 with a parent will learn about cute and fascinating mini-mammals through activities, crafts and stories. Theme is “Lickety-Split Rabbits.” Fee is $10 per pair and $5 per additional child. Advance payment required.

It’s a Wild, Wild World—Friday, Oct. 1 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Children ages 3 to 5 with a parent will join a naturalist for an adventurous walk into the swamp to find as many critters as they can. Fee is $10 per pair and $5 per additional child. Advance payment required.

FAMILY & ADULT PROGRAMS

Hawkwatch Hike—Monday, Sept. 27 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Family and friends will join a naturalist to hike the trails with an eye out for migrating birds of prey. Program is free.

The Great Deck Sit—Saturday, Oct. 2 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Family and friends (ages 10 and older) will join a naturalist on the new deck at the Environmental Education Center for a portion of the day  to help record 12 hours of animal activity in the Great Swamp. The program is free.

Monarchs on the Move—Saturday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Family and friends will join a naturalist to bid bon voyage to the Monarch butterflies as they begin their annual migration to Mexico. Fee is $9 per person. Advance payment required.

1770s Living History Festival—Sunday, Oct. 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Family and friends will enjoy a step back in time to the Colonial period where craftspeople play their trades, a town crier delivers the daily news, and military detachments camp and conduct maneuvers. Suggested donation is $4 per person.
