High School Freshman Orientation, Several Meetings This Week

Bernards Board of Education meets again before start of school year, Township Committee convenes last time before summer ends.

Whether they're enthusiastic or a bit on the reluctant side, freshmen will be heading back to school a little early this week to gain a little familiarity for what's to come when school actually starts the following week, on Sept. 6.

The orientation — during which this year's freshman class will get to tour the sprawling high school building off South Finley Ave. and locate major landmarks (such as the school gyms and their locker) — is scheduled for Wednesday.

Those whose last names begin with A to K are asked to show up first, at 9 a.m., and those with last names beginning with L to Z have a date to learn about the school starting at noon.

School administrators said then they wanted to relieve at least some of the traffic that each weekday morning clogs the entrance to the high school, and claimed that the move had indeed helped reduce jam-ups at the high school entrance.

However, with buses and parents seeking an alternate route to the high school ending up on their narrow residential streets, neighbors in the which they say is a safety hazard. Options for No decision has yet been made.

Other meetings scheduled for this week include:

  • The Beautification Task Force is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. on Monday in the small conference room at the municipal building at 1 Collyer Lane in Basking Ridge.
  • The township Pool Commission is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the municipal building.
  • The Township Committee is scheduled to meet at 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the municipal building.
  • Also, next Monday, Sept. 3, is the final day that the Pleasant Valley Pool will be open. The pool will be closed for the season as of Tuesday, Sept. 4.
