Somerset County Continues More Closures Into Tuesday

Situation will be evaluated on Tuesday regarding when parks will reopen.

Somerset County has announced that more of its government offices, programs and services will remain closed through Tuesday due to Hurricane Sandy. Some closures and cancellations of services nclude county and all scheduled recycling pickups.

This includes general-government offices at 20 Grove St. and 27 Warren St. in Somerville, as well as the Richard Hall Community Mental Health Center on North Bridge Street in Bridgewater and the Board of Social Services at 73 E. High St. in Somerville, according to information issued by the county on Monday afternoon. County employees should check with their supervisors as to whether they need to report to work.

The county’s seven senior centers, including the Senior Wellness Center that serves the Somerset Hills area as well as centers in Hillsborough and elsewhere, closed on Monday, will again be closed on Tuesday. For patrons’ safety, the main Office on Aging & Disability Services in Somerville will be closed to walk-ins both days. For assistance, call 908-704-6346 or toll-free 1-888-747-1122.

Meals on Wheels will not be delivered Monday and Tuesday. Clients are asked to use the shelf-stable meals provided earlier.

Classes were canceled on Monday at Raritan Valley Community College where a shelter had been set up by Monday afternoon. Patch will update on Tuesday's schedule.

Recycling pickups canceled

Regularly scheduled recycling pickups are canceled for Monday in Branchburg and Raritan and for Tuesday in Hillsborough and Millstone. The county will assess after that whether recycling pickups should resume on Wednesday. However county Recycling Division employees should report to work as usual to handle other work at the recycling center.

Due to the anticipated impact of Hurrcane Sandy, the entire Somerset County Park system will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, the Somerset County Parks Commission already had announced on Sunday.

This includes all general use parks and golf courses.

The closure includes where all riding lessons are canceled, indoors or out, according to spokesman Rich Reitman.

All county transportation services, except for the transport of dialysis patients, will be suspended on Monday. For information call the Transportation Division’s toll-free number at 1-800-246-0527.

Other Somerset County closings and cancellations:

  • Superior Court offices in Somerville, which are under the state’s jurisdiction, also are closed Monday. New Jersey state offices and most municipal offices and schools also are closed Monday due to the storm.
  • Raritan Valley Community College will be closed on Monday. All classes and programs will be canceled at the Branchburg campus and at all instructional sites.

A decision will be made on Tuesday regarding the re-opening of the parks, according to the announcement.
