Library, Town Offices Closed, Schools Open for MLK Day

Hurricane Sandy meant that school has been rescheduled in Bernards Township schools.

Monday's federal holiday to recognize slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will close municipal offices and the Bernards Township Library — but not local schools.

All Bernards Township municipal offices will be closed for the holiday, according to the Bernards Township website.

The library at 32 S. Maple Ave., after being closed for the holiday, will reopen on Tuesday for scheduled events for the rest of the week. Information is online.

Bernards Township schools, however, will be in session after the holiday was returned to the school calendar when the Board of Education combed the second half of this year's school calendar to make up days lost for time off for Hurricane Sandy and the resulting power outages.

However, discussions or in some other way honor or learn about King and the civil rights movement.

In another service-related activity, students from age 12 to 15 who wish to log community service hours can participate in "Green Team" environmental activities from 1 to 4 p.m. next Saturday at the Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge. Register online or call 908-766-2489.
