Lighting Plans Discussed at Mosque Hearing

Testimony continued Tuesday night in the application by the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge, which wants to build a mosque at the edge of Liberty Corner Village. About 25 members of the public observed the meeting, held in the Bernards Township courtroom.

The project engineer, Adnan Khan, talked about the proposed center's sensor-triggered security lights, and agreed to the township's request to limit them to just four locations. He described the parking lot's free-standing lighting fixtures, some or all of which could be stay illuminated as late as 11:30 p.m. during Ramadan, when the center holds evening services.

Attorney Robert Simon, who represents some neighbors opposed to the proposal, asked for specific information about the strength and timing of the illumination.

The Planning Board has been hearing the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge's application since the summer of 2012.

According to the Planning Board office, the applicant's planner David Zimmerman will present testimony on April 8, and hearing will continue at the April 24 and May 6 meetings -- though this is a tentative schedule and subject to change.
