Local Golfers Dip Under Par At Mayor's Tournament

Perfect weather is backdrop for third annual Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament at township course.

The Bernards Township third annual Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament brought three dozen golfers out to compete last Saturday at the municipal for golf, lunch and trophies on a day with perfect weather.

The 2012 Mayor’s Cup Tournament Champion Team trophy went to golfers John Meyers, Mike Porter, Patsy Ragonese IV and Dave Schneider.

Two groups were tied at 3 under par (32) for the tournament, said township golf supervisor Jack McGrath. In the playoff, the winning foursome made a birdie (2) on the first hole of sudden death playoff.

The sun was shining, and according to McGrath, golf course conditions "were as good as they have ever been."

According to Jennifer Gander, director of the Bernards Township trophies also went to Scott Kim for longest drive, mens; Jacqueline Tobia for longest drive, womens; Tony Gervasio for closest to the pin, mens; and Elena Baurkot for closest to the pin, womens.

McGrath said 36 players had signed up ahead of time to participate in the municipal course off Valley Road.

Mayor Mary Pavlini, who said she is a former golfer, was on hand to present the trophies to winners.

The participants were treated to lunch — pulled pork and barbequed chicken, corn, fresh cornbread and more — prepared by chefs Gerald Gaynor and Fred Ohlweiler from the Foxhole Cafe, located on the by the municipal golf course. The veterans-run restaurant is open to the public.
