Local Schools Start; Mosque Back Before Planning Board

Whether summer vacation seemed long, or short, it's over for local students.

Thousands of K-12 students in the Bernards Township and Somerset Hills public school districts head back to school this Thursday, following a few more days of summer vacation to savor a very long Labor Day weekend.

In Bernards Township, said Schools Superintendent Nick Markarian. Markarian himself, previously school business administrator, is new in the position of the school district's top administrator following Valerie Goger's retirement as of the end of June.

In Somerset Hills, longtime superintendent Peter Miller is planning to retire following the completion of the 2012-13 school year.

This Tuesday, the Planning Board is scheduled to hear the continuation of a public hearing by The Islamic Society of Basking Ridge, about plans to demolish an existing home and to put up a new The plan has drawn vigorous opposition from some Liberty Corner residents. 

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Bernards Township municipal building at 1 Collyer Lane in Basking Ridge.

In other events this week:

  • On Monday, Labor Day, the Pleasant Valley Pool at Pleasant Valley Park is due to be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. before closing for the season.
  • The Bernards Township Board of Adjustment is scheduled to meet starting at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the municipal building.
  • The Deer Management Advisory Committee in Bernards Township is scheduled to meet starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the municipal building.
