Millington Quarry Plan Up for Public Comment on Tuesday Night

Public comment could begin at meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Following the public is expected to have more of its say on the Millington Quarry's plan for closing and "rehabilitating" the longtime quarry site at a meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Citizens for a Clean and Safe Millington Quarry sent out an email blast on Tuesday urging and inviting "public comment on quarry rehabiliation plan to import 500,000 cubic yards of fill with thousands of truckloads coming down Stonehouse and Lyons in the future."

The group insisted — is "bad for Basking Ridge, bad for your property values and your health."

The quarry's previous disagreement with citizens and the township about soil and fill importation to cover and fill quarried area, and the source of that soil, had led to previous litigation. The litigation has been put on stay during the Planning Board's review of a new plan, which also calls for isolating an area where soil brought into the site before 2008 had tested as containing contaminants.

The will have the ultimate say on whether to approve the rehabilitation plan. The Planning Board will pass along a recommendation to the governing body following its review.

"If this plan involves future litigation, the public's appearance at the hearings will be part of the record," the email from the citizens group said. "An absence of public interest suggests the residents don't care. We know this is not the case."

The series of hearings included discussion about a the and the probable sources of , as called for in the plan.
