More Summer Events at Lord Stirling Parks in Basking Ridge

Cooler evening hour for dog walks; nature walks through September; summer moonlight horse ride.

The ever-popular Saturday Dog Walks at Somerset County Park Commission in Basking Ridge are being continued through the summer months, although the time has been moved from morning to a cooler evening hour.

The event — among others being held at the county park commission's Lord Stirling parks in Basking Ridge — will be hosted on a weekly basis at 7 p.m. by the Friends of Lord Stirling Stable.

Check-in time for pets and their owners will begin at 6:45 P.M. every Saturday at the stable at 256 S. Maple Ave. The guided trail walk will commence at 7 p.m. and last for approximately one hour. Registration is $3 per dog and all pets must be leashed and kept under control at all times.

These sanctioned Dog Walks offer participants the only opportunity to explore the beautiful equestrian trails of Lord Stirling Stable on foot.

Meanwhile, around the corner, Nature Walks at the Environmental Education Center are scheduled for Saturdays from noon to 1 p.m. on August 13 and 20 and on Sundays from noon to 1 p.m. on July 31; August 14 and 21; and Sept. 11 and 25.

The hour-long naturalist led interpretive walks focus on a different theme during these weeks. Call 908-766-2489 for schedule updates. The walk is free of charge and preregistration is not required. The walk is not designed for organized groups.

The Environmental Education Center is at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge and is open seven days each week. 

also will host a guided Moonlight Ride for private horse owners along the property's trails from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, August 13.

An experienced trail guide will accompany participants in groups of no more that eight riders.

In-person registration is open at the stable office at 256 S. Maple Ave. through Wednesday, August 10, 2011. Fee is $15 for 2011 trail card holders and $20 for horse owners who do not have a trail card. A current negative Coggins taken within the last twelve months must be presented for each horse at the time of registration.

Lord Stirling Stable is situated on 450 acres with 18 miles of trails, through woods and fields, with one indoor ring, three outdoor rings, and an outdoor-jumping course. For additional information, please call Lord Stirling Stable at 908-766-5955.
