Somerset County's emergency shelter set up at Raritan Valley Community College for those seeking shelter from Sandy has been forced to close due to a lack of power, although another county shelter in Manville remains open, according to the Somerset County Office of Emergency Management.
The shelter had been closed since Tuesday morning, according to information received at about 3 p.m. from Michele Samarya-Timm, Somerset County shelter coordinator. That shelter had been set up to serve more than 200 people.
Manville remains open
However, a shelter at the Manville VFW at 600 Washington Ave. remains open, according to Samarya-Timm. That shelter had 134 occupants as of Tuesday afternoon, and has the capacity to serve 250, according to the county.
County parks also closed through Wednesday
Somerset County Parks will be closed through Wednesday. This includes all general use parks, golf courses, Lord Stirling Stable, and the Environmental Education Center, according to the county. Decisions on opening will be made on a day the day basis.
