U.S. Postal Service Shelves Plans to Close The Hills Post Office

Postal official said surveys were never sent out because possibility of closing the Allen Road post office has been abandoned for now.

The U.S. Postal Service has dropped its study to consider closing the Village Station Post Office at 566 Allen Road in Basking Ridge, which will remain open for the forseeable future, a spokesman for the postal service said on Monday.

"The study has been stopped and we have no current plans to re-open the study," George B. Flood, corporate communications manager for the USPS Northeast area, said in an email.

The USPS announced in late July that it would pare down its 32,000 offices nationwide, and the Village Center Station, serving thousands of residents in The Hills, was among the sites being considered for .

Later in August, Flood said the study on whether the post office at the top of Allen Road would be among almost 4,000 postal centers that may be closed would take several months to complete, with no definite time frame available in mind.

The study was to begin with surveys mailed to every residential, business and post office box customer served by the Village Center Station, Flood said

But this week, Flood said the decision to leave the Village Center Station open was made even prior to mailing questionnaires to the public. No announcement of the study was ever posted in the lobby, either, as had been planned, he said.

Employees at the post office also said on Monday that the location in The Hills would remain open.

If the Village Station location had closed, residents of The Hills would have had to travel to the main Basking Ridge post office on Brownlee Place in Basking Ridge center for such services as stopping mail delivery or picking up a package.
