Area Students Compete in Somerset Hills Regional Spelling Bee

The Junior Women's Club of Somerset Hills hosted the Somerset Hills Regional Spelling Bee tournament on Thursday night at Bedminster Elementary School.

The Women's Club invites all fourth and fifth graders from schools in Bedminster, Bernardsville, Bernards, Far Hills, Millington, Peapack-Gladstone and Warren School to participate, although no Bernards students from Bernards schools were present.

Karthik Irakam, a fifth grade student at ALT School in Warren won the Spelling Bee, correctly spelling "upheaval" and "materialize" in the final round to take first place.

Francesca Tannenbaum, a fourth grade student at Bedminster Elementary, took second, and Declan McParland, a fourth grader at Bedwell Elementary in Bernardsville came in third.

The top three spellers will represent the Somerset Hills region in the District Spelling Bee, held on Feb. 13 at Affinity Credit Union in Basking Ridge.
