Board of Education Meeting, Life After Sandy This Week

Fellowship Village hosting lost Trick or Treating fun on Monday afternoon.

The Bernards Board of Education meeting scheduled for last week was the night that Hurricane Sandy arrived on everyone's doorsteps.

While that meeting never happened, the school board is scheduled to get back to business this Monday at 7 p.m. at the William Annin Middle School.

Along with regular business on the agenda, schools Superintendent Nick Markarian said last week that the subject undoubtedly will come up about how to make up the school district's unanticipated two-week absence.

Two of those days, this past Thursday and Friday, already were scheduled to be off this past week to accommodate the annual teachers convention in Atlantic City, later canceled due to Sandy.

Meanwhile, school officials already have announced that the weeklong vacation in April on this year's school calendar should be considered gone.

Markarian said last Friday that contractually, the school year couldn't be extended beyond June 30, and school officials wouldn't want to do so, anyway.

Meanwhile, unlike last year, when some new faces arrived on the board, the three incumbent board members re-elected to their seats, Audrey Cohen Sherwyn, Bev Darvin Cwerner and Robin McKeon, will keep their positions. However, due to changes in school elections procedures this past year, those board members don't actually begin their new three-year terms until Jan. 1.

  • Also on Monday, the Bernards Township Environmental Commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. on the first floor of the municipal building at 1 Collyer Lane.
  • Fellowship Village retirement center, 8000 Fellowship Road, off Allen Road is hosting Trick or Treat for the children of Basking Ridge from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, especially considering people who live in Basking Ridge are still without electricity. Fellowship Village is inviting children 0 through 5th grade to come here trick or treating. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Those accompanying trick or treaters at Somerset Village should make sure children walk in the hallways, as the organizers do not want to knock over any of our residents. Buildings 1,2,3,4,5 and 6, inside units only, will participate. Trick or treaters should first go to the community center to be directed.
  • A donation of a canned good for the local food bank is appreciated.

The scheduled Bernards Township Committee meeting has been canceled for Nov. 13.
