Blast message informing Oak Street and Liberty Corner Schools will be open. Somerset Hills back to regular schedule, with some bus service.

School is due to resume tomorrow at the and elementary schools, the and according to a message from the schools superintendent on the Bernards Township school website. A blast message was sent Tuesday night informing parents that the Oak Street and Liberty Corner schools would also be open on Wednesday.

With power outages widespread through the township following Saturday's snowstorm — and power still out on Tuesday at the Oak Street and Liberty Corner elementary schools, the entire district was closed on Monday and Tuesday. The website also cited concern about road conditions. Many trees and power lights were down as a result of the storm.

"In consultation with the police department, we believe the streets are navigable for the buses," the message also said.

"If power is restored, school also will resume at and but we won’t know that until this evening. We will send a blast message tonight stating which schools will be open tomorrow," said the message from Superintendent Valerie Goger on the website as of 10 p.m. The blast had been sent out on Tuesday evening, she said.

Traffic remains a major traffic concern in the Homestead Village neighborhood, on the way to the Cedar Hill School, the message noted. "Fallen trees and wires are still preventing access to part of Peachtree Road, the entrance way to Cedar Hill School. Police will be stationed there tomorrow [Wednesday] morning to assist car and bus arrivals."

After dropping children at Cedar Hill School, parents may exit the neighborhood on Homestead Road, and make only a right turn onto South Finley, the superintendent's message said. "Or with careful maneuvering around wires, cars may wend through the neighborhood to exit onto Cross Road."

The New Jersey Department of Education considers these emergency closings the same as ‘snow days’ used by schools in the winter, according to the school superintendent. Districts will be held to the 180-day requirement to fulfill a school year, regardless of weather or other emergency conditions.

The district has approved a 183-day school calendar, with three days built in for potential closings, and has now used two days.

If the districts exceed our three-day allotment, the school system will need to make up the extra days, the time will need to be made up, beginning with the Friday of April recess, and working back towards the beginning of the week, according to the superintendent's message.
