PHOTOS: Sunday's Sun Shines Light on Storm Damage

Traffic lights out, no power, debris on roads even after clean-up efforts had gotten well underway by Sunday afternoon.

Basking Ridge was still feeling the effect of the snow storm Sunday afternoon, even as temperatures climbed into the 40s, well above freezing, and cleanup already had begun.

Trees were being removed, and power lines were being repaired. But it's going to take a lot more than a day to clear away the evidence of the October snowstorm that mixed wet snow with wet leaves to create a sodden mess.

Mayor John Malay said that residents are responsible for removing trees on their own property, but the town will remove trees in the right-of-way along the road. The township or other official entity, such as the county, removes trees in the road.

Part of the cleanup involved thousands of people waiting for their power to come back on, and looking for ways to warm up, charge batteries, eat a warm meal or take a shower.

The Somerset Hills YMCA opened its Riverwalk faciliity — which had electricity — for showering and powering up from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. All who needed a place to get such services were welcomed.

Russell North of Tewksbury, in Hunterdon County, said he was hugely appreciative the YMCA was open since he had no water and no power at his home near Fox Hill Road.

Julia Curtis, director of membership operations, said the day had been busier than expected.

Downstairs, in the lobby, Becky and Danny Gohsler, and their mother, Jane, were visiting from their home without power in Mendham Township, as Becky did homework and they plugged in other electronic devices. Danny, a member, said he had worked out first in the gym before taking a shower.

Asked whether they felt their resident Governor, Christie, had power, the family mused that he probably had a generator.
