Ridge Girls Basketball 2009-10 Season Preview

A senior-laden team hopes to improve on last year's 8-8 record.

Nine out of the 10 girls on last year's 8-8 Ridge girls varsity basketball team are back for the 2009-10.

The combination of seniority, speed and athleticism has head coach Cherie Stappenbeck eager to improve on last year's record.

"We have a lot of experience, composure and leadership on [this year's] team," Stappenbeck said. "We are always looking to improve ... [and] I think we will have a more successful season this year.

The team has five returning seniors, all of whom played on last year's varsity squad, and all but two players on the varsity team are either juniors or seniors.

What the team lacks in height, it more than makes up for in speed and quickness, according to the coach. "We are a very fast team this year – very athletic," Stappenbeck said. "We can use that to our advantage."

The season begins on tonight for the girls team with a home game against Warren Hills. Warren Hills beat Ridge by one point in one of their games last year, giving Ridge an opportunity to benefit from their past collective experiences at the start of the season.
