Ridge Field Hockey Has New & Familiar Faces for 2011
Team starts season with many young players and a few seasoned veterans.
The school year is starting, and that means fall sports are about to start for the Ridge High School varsity squads. As opening day approaches, we're taking a look at each of the teams as they ready for competition. Today, we take a look at the Red Devils field hockey team.
OVERVIEW
The Lady Devils come into this season as a young squad after graduating 13 seniors from the 2010 squad. Ridge will go into the season with only three returning varsity starters and four returning varsity players. With the limited varsity experience, head coach Kim Clark is working with the learning curve. "They have a great work ethic and they work hard every single day," say coach Clark. "They just need to keep going in the right direction."
LAST SEASON'S RESULTS
Ridge went 5-12-2 during the 2010 season.

KEEP YOUR EYE ON
- Sammy Brown, Forward (Jr.)—She came into the season in great shape. She is a natural athlete and a great leader on the attack. She will be one of the team's point leaders (goals and assists).
- Madison Fischl, Back (Sr.)-She is a leader and one of the captains on the squad. She will most likely play left back for us. She is just a great defender and everyone respects her. She has been responsible for melding together the defense.
- Hanna Quigley, Center Back (So.)—Hanna stepped up big today in our scrimmage and surprised a lot of people.
- Ellexa Thomas, Mid (So.) - Ellexa is excellent at distributing the ball. I know I can put her anywhere on the field and she will do a great job.
THEY'LL MISS

- Katie Solon, Back—A solid defender in last year's backfield. Katie is playing club field hockey at the University of Miami at Ohio.
- Katie Twillman, Back—Another big contributor to our defense. She is going to Georgia but not playing field hockey.

FINAL NOTE: When asked about the change in the ruling that put eye protection on the field hockey players, coach Clark said, "I don't like it. We try to teach the girls to keep their heads up while they are dribbling and they can't do it with the goggles on. But if it saves one person from a severe eye injury, it is worth it."
