School Construction Manager Hired for Summer Projects

EPIC Management, which managed the school district's major expansion project, hired Monday night.

EPIC Management of Piscataway, which oversaw the school district's major expansion project in the middle of the last decade, has been hired by the to manage school construction projects scheduled for this summer into fall.

EPIC Management submitted the lowest price, $69,210, in the three bids submitted in response to the school district's request for a proposal for the position of construction manager, Board Member William Koch reported to the school board of Monday night.

Koch recommended EPIC not only as offering the least expensive alternative, but also because he said that the firm had managed the school district's $54 million expansion project several years ago, a major overhaul of the district's facilities that he said came in under its estimated budget.

Koch said the primary responsibility of the construction manager is to be on site this summer during a planned project to rebuild a wall behind the where the main building dates back to the early 20th century, and to install new curbing on the property.

However, Koch said the construction manager also would oversee other projects throughout the district planned for after school lets out this year, including the retrofitting of lights.

By having a construction manager who can recognize ways to make the projects more cost effective, and to perhaps seek rebates for school improvements that increase energy efficiency, the district should be able to recoup almost all of EPIC's fee, Koch said.

Koch said the township engineering department, which a few years ago took on the role of managing some other facilities improvements, was unable to provide assistance at this time.
