"The Sound of Music" is probably one of the best known and loved musicals. For decades children have grown up singing "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi" and "Edelweiss." Only last year "The Sound of Music" celebrated its 50th Anniversary. It was 1959 when "The Sound of Music" first premiered on Broadway winning five Tony Awards. The movie version (winner of five Academy Awards) debuted in 1965 starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

The musical is based on the memoirs of Maria Von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, and set to music by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. The story takes place in Austria, prior to the onset of World War II and chronicles the experience of young Maria who is uncertain about her future as a nun and leaves the abbey to care for a wealthy widower's seven children.  As a former naval captain, Baron Von Trapp runs a strict household and the children are initially resistant to Maria. With music and song, Maria soon wins over the children, and finally, the Baron as well.
