Winless Squads Score First Victories

Week 8 a big one for both those near the bottom of the standings, as well as those on top.

Week 8 was full of important games throughout the Mid-State 39 Conference. In the Watchung Division, two of the top teams in the conference, Immaculata (8-0) and Elizabeth (6-2) faced each other in a game that forced Immaculata to defend its position atop the division. NJ.com reported that Immaculata came away with the victory and remains the top ranked team by The Star-Ledger in the conference, and one of only four undefeated Mid-State 39 teams left this season.

In the Mountain Division, two teams that were undefeated, Summit and Cranford, battled for first place. By the end of the night, the winner was clear: Summit remained undefeated by a commanding score of 52-21, according to NJ.com.

Hillsborough could have taken third place in the Delaware Division with a win against Phillipsburg, but after both teams scored seven in the first quarter, it was Phillipsburg that in each consecutive quarter while shutting Hillsborough out in the second, third and fourth. Phillipsburg came away with the 28-7 win and kept their third place position in the division. Phillipsburg’s Alex Martin had three touchdowns, including one 97-yard reception. He finished with nearly 200 yards rushing and receiving.

Going into Week 8, there were five winless teams in the conference, but going into Week 9 only two remain after Bridgewater-Raritan, Watchung Hills and Manville secured their first wins of the season over the weekend.

Bridgewater faced divisional rival Ridge, a 2-5 team going into the game. After the first quarter, Bridgewater held a 7-0 lead that they gave up in the second quarter after Ridge scored eight. Going into the fourth, Ridge lead 14-13, but Bridgewater scored a touchdown on a five-yard run by Julian Dorsey and then to extend their lead scored again on an 85-yard touchdown return by Ray Mastroianni, Bridgewater’s quarterback who also plays defense. The final was 25-14 with .

Upset of the Week

The Watchung Hills Warriors did not win a single game last season. Going into this week, it looked like they might not win a game this year as well. Plainfield had only one win this season, but had played in close games against winning teams like Phillipsburg, who it lost to by one point, and Somerville, who Plainfield defeated early in the season. On Friday night for the Warriors’ homecoming game, they took an early lead in the first and did not allow Plainfield to score, despite a 150 yard rushing game from Robert Jackson, until the fourth. By then, it was too late, and Watchung Hills , 12-7.

Standout Performance

Quarterback led on both sides of the ball in Bridgewater’s first win of the year, going 8 of 14 for 78 yards, rushing for 46 yards on only six carries, and returning an interception for 85-yards and a touchdown against Ridge on Friday night for a 25-14 homecoming game win in Bridgewater.

Mid-State 39 Standings

Standings are a combination of Patch records, as well as from NJ.com. Coaches are required by the NJSIAA to submit results to NJ.com in order to be eligible for the post season, due to a contract between the two.
