Cyclists Set for Eighth Annual 'Century for the Cure' Ride

For the eighth year in a row, cycling enthusiasts and volunteers are being called upon to help pedal for a difference in the  to benefit The Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation.

Each year, dedicated participants gather for this inspirational event with the common goal of eradicating cancer, one mile at a time. CINJ is a Center of Excellence of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  

There is still time to register for this year’s Sept. 8 event, which begins and ends at in Warren, with courses trailing through the scenic back roads of central New Jersey. The event is open to a diverse community—offering 100-mile, 80-mile, and 40-mile cycling options to choose from.

The routes will head throughout the Somerset Hills including some roads through Basking Ridge.

A “virtual rider” option is also available, allowing non-riders to fundraise and support the cause without physically participating in the ride. Participants, virtual riders and volunteers can register online at www.centuryforthecure.com.

Century for the Cure is the idea of Warren resident . After successful treatment at CINJ for stage four non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma nearly 15 years ago, Glickman started hosting the event as a “thank you” to all the instrumental people involved in his recovery and to educate and bring cancer awareness to his community.

Since the first ride in 2005, the dedication and efforts of all participants have translated into a total of $825,000 to directly benefit CINJ.

“The efforts of the community over the past seven years have produced numerous opportunities to advance in the fight against cancer,” Glickman said. “All participants, cycling or not, have a significant impact in making a difference in research, projects, and therapies at CINJ and we are all so proud and grateful for their efforts.”

In particular, a portion of the funds raised will continue to support the work of Roger Strair, MD, PhD, chief of CINJ’s Hematologic Malignancies/Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Program and professor of medicine, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, who was Glickman’s oncologist during his treatment at CINJ. “Scott’s dedication and energy in Century for the Cure each year continues to support tremendous advancements in research at CINJ. His commitment to the fight against cancer makes fewer battles ‘unwinnable’ each year,” said Dr. Strair.
