Dunham Park Roller Rink Closed for Final Coating

Recreation department asks players to stay off for about two weeks so as not to damage final repairs.

The roller in March after being closed after more than two years while in disrepair, now is closed temporarily for about two weeks while the final coating and lining are being placed on the surface.

"The rink is currently being color coated," Jennifer Gander, director of the Bernards Township Director of Parks and Recreation, said Monday.

"We did have some kids who skated this weekend even though the rink was closed in between coats. This can damage the surface, so we are trying to get the word out to please keep off until the rink is reopened."

A notice will be posted at the facility when the rink officially re-opens, according to information from the parks and recreation department. The fenced rink is located off the Somerville Road entrance to the township's Harry Dunham Park.

The rink, with a new asphalt service, informally opened in March with the unlocking of the gate to allow entry.

The repair job for the hockey rink was not then totally complete, and officials for the township parks and recreation department said the facility would be closed again temporarily when the final color coating is installed.

Looking ahead, parks officials, including Gander, said the department is considering starting starting hockey league games this summer at the newly refurbished rink.

Nevertheless, the overhaul of the hockey rink — which stirred up some local controversy over the best new surface to install on the township-owned facility — was mostly complete by early spring. The facility was been closed since summer 2010.

After multiple tries to find an acceptable contractor to resurface, regrade and install a drainage system at the closed roller hockey rink at Harry Dunham Park, the Township Committee last September awarded a $121,660 contract for the job. But even before the contractor started work, township trucks and workers and digging up the old and cracked asphalt surface.

Township Engineer Tom Timko said the contractor by the township is Halecon Inc. of Bridgewater.
