EVENTS: Sign up For Fall Riding Lessons, 'Taming of Shrew'

Savor some last summer events while looking ahead to fall.

This week's list includes some last summertime events that you could be savoring in memory when the weather gets cold! Enjoy them while you can!

But for the many equestrians among us, take the time to register for the riding lesson you want at Lord Stirling Stable. This is such a great time of year to be on horseback!

There are events listed below for both children and adults, and of course for families.

County Caper
When/Where:This Saturday and Sunday, full day event that has you chase down adventures throughout Somerset County's parks with a home base at the , 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge. One day "Accelerated County Caper" for those 15 and older on Saturday.
Why Go: Learn about your county park system while playing a local version of “The Amazing Race” which will take teams to various destinations within Somerset County. Once they arrive, teams perform tasks, find clues, or gather information. Each team will be given a journal to collect stamps and/or record their findings. Bring your camera! Have fun and win prizes!

Free Fridays at Somerset Hills YMCA
When/Where:
Fridays through the end of August at both the Riverwalk and main facility of the 140 Mount Airy Road, Basking Ridge.
Why Go:
Because you can try out the YMCA's pool and many other facilities/activities you've always wanted to, while you have a chance.
Cost:
Free

Registration for Fall Riding Lessons
When/Where: Starting Saturday at 8 a.m., online registration and in person registration for fall riding lessons for both juniors and adults at the Somerset County in Basking Ridge.
Why Go: We live in horse country, and lots of people are in line to sign up. And fall is the BEST time to ride, right?
Cost: Depends on lesson plan, returning students can register online, and all can register at the stable office, open daily, 908-766-5955.

Teen "Hunger Games" Party and Movie
When/Where: Come in costume at 1 p.m. on Friday, movie at 2 p.m. at the Bernards Township Library, 32 S. Maple Ave. Basking Ridge. Party until 4 p.m.
Why Go: In a short time, you'll be back in school. Have fun with your friends now! Open to teens in grades 7 to 12.
Cost: Free.

The Taming of the Shrew
When/Where:
The 'Plays in the Park' series at in Basking Ridge adds a third play at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night.
Why Go:
To see guests, The Troupe of Friends of Westfield, perform a Shakespearean favorite. Bring a lawn chair and/or blanket for seating.
Cost:
Free, donations accepted.

Hit a Home Run With the Patriots
When/Where: Friday at 6 p.m. at  in Bridgewater.
Why Go: Because it's baseball, and we all want to try to get that home run. Head out for an All-You-Can-Eat Barbecue Buffet, followed by the game against York Revolution at 7:05 p.m.
Cost: $9.50, depending on seats.

Fireworks With the Patriots
When/Where: Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at in Bridgewater.
Why Go: It's a game against York Revolution, followed by a great fireworks show at the stadium.
Cost: $9.50, depending on seats.

Opera at Stein with Julie Stevens
When/Where: Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Martin and Edith Stein Assisted Living Residence in Somerset.
Why Go: Because Soprano Julie Stevens will be performing some Opera classics at the center for all those wanting to hear.
Cost: Free.

Final Summer Concert Series
When/Where: Sunday at 7 p.m. at  in Bridgewater.
Why Go: Because it's the final celebration of the summer with the last concert in the series, sponsored by the Somerset County Parks Commission. This final week is "Standing in the Shadows: A Four Tops Tribute."
Cost: Free.


When/Where: Friday-Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Woman's Club of Morristown, 51 South St.
Why Go: You're looking for bargains!
Cost: Bring your wallet


When/Where: Saturday, 9:30 a.m. at 32 Cutler Drive, Morris Plains
Why Go: You are looking for some bargains; you want to support the fundraiser for Laurie Kammer, who is recovering from a spinal cord injury.
Cost: Bring your wallet


When/Where: Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon at the Rabbinical College of America, Morris Township
Why Go: You want to help out the community by packing boxes of non-perishable food items and then delivering them to needy families.
Cost: Free


When/Where: Saturday, 11 a.m. in Dover
Why Go: You want to enjoy a Saturday filled with information and events sponsored by the Morris County Organization for Hispanic Affairs
Cost: Free


When/Where: Sunday, 4 p.m. at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum, Morristown
Why Go: You want to hear some historically-accurate Civil War tuneage.
Cost: $8, regular museum admission
