SUNDAY EVENTS: Somerset Hills Hauntings, Art Exhibit, More

Still some Sunday events _ an art exhibit, free wedding planning event and tour of a lake museum— and a Witch Hazel hunt, anyone?

If you're not going to attend the annual Far Hills Race Meeting over the next few days, there are still things to do.

You can investigate otherworldly visions in our area at the on Sunday afternoon in Basking Ridge, or try something a little out of this world. Such as seeing "Weird Al" Yankovic in person. Or going on a witch hazel hunt, a healthy twist on commemorating the season of the witch.

And if you envision yourself floating down the aisle in white sometime in your future, there's a chance to pick ups some free professional advice on wedding planning this Sunday at the Bridgewater Commons Mall.

Where/When: From 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23 at the Chatham Day School, 700 Shunpike, Chatham.
Why Go: Bocchino, a Basking Ridge resident, is an abstract artist who paints for adults, but who also has produced childrens' books, including, most recently, "Who Am I? The Story of the Artist." Her books, paintings and prints will be at the exhibit.

When/Where:
Gates open at 8 a.m., first race at 1 p.m. at Moorland Farms off Route 202 in Far Hills on Saturday, Oct. 22.
Why Go:
Considered the social event of the season, the steeplechase races are a chance to tailgate, picnic and meet friends. The races attract about 50,000 people each year, with social strata climbing the higher you stake your spot going up the hill. The race also benefits Somerset Medical Center in general, and the Steeplechase Cancer Center in particular.

Cost: $50 for one ticket before race day, $100 at gate, other information online or by calling 908-685-2929. Also buy tickets or parking spot from area merchants.


When/Where: The exhibit by continues every Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. during October at the Brick Academy, 15 W. Oak St., in Basking Ridge.
Why Go: Besides learning more about the history of some local places, you may be intrigued to hear and see exhibits about some of the history that still may be among us. Do you remember Phyllis, in search of her lost love? Or elegant but haunting Blairsden? You decide if you believe.

Basking Ridge Vocalist Brynn Stanley
Where/When: From 9 p.m. to midnight on Friday, in performance with a jazz quartet, at Rod's Steak and Seafood Grille in Madison.
Why Go: Because live music always is a treat, and you can offer a hand in applause for a local girl since Brynn is from Basking Ridge.

"Distant Thunder" Film Screening and Discussion
Where/When: From noon to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Bernards Township Public Library, 32 S. Maple Ave., Basking Ridge.
Why Go: Part of series of film screenings with Dr. Kalyan Ray, English Professor at County College of Morris. Film buffs get to feed their minds and also bring a snack or lunch to enjoy.

Why Go:

Why Go: Because you want to know all about the lake—and you want to see memorabilia, photos, historical artifacts and exhibits.

'Weird Al' Yankovic 'Alpocalypse Tour'
When/Where: Friday at 8 p.m. at Mayo Performing Arts Center, Morristown
Why Go: Because, hey, it's 'Weird Al.' You need more of a reason? It's family-friendly fun for all.

Saturday Morning Road Ride From Marty's
When/Where: Saturday at 8 a.m. from , Morristown
Why Go: Because you're an avid cyclist that can keep up with some hearty legs and some heavy hills.

Why Go: To get the fright of your life while supporting District 1's volunteer fire department
