56 Girls Lacrosse Teams Bring Thousands to Ridge

Teams with girls in grades 3-8 from all over N.J., N.Y. and Pa. gather to play tournament.

A crowd of about 2,000 girl lacrosse players, parents and supporters descended on the grounds of Ridge High School and surrounding facilities all day on Sunday for a grades 3-8 tournament for players in T3 Lacrosse.

Teams from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania arrived to play on the cool and cloudy day with the tournament organized by the sports organization, which is not connected with local schools. Vendors also added to the festive atmosphere.

The Somerset Hills seventh and eighth grade Select Team, including girls from Bernards Township and the Somerset Hills area, went undefeated in their bracket (Bracket 4) to advance to the semi-finals, where they played a team from Tewksbury Township and won 8-1, according to Debra DeWitt, wife of one of the coaches, Brian DeWitt.

The team then advanced to the championship and faced Ridgewood, but lost with a score of 2-3, she said. RHS varsity girls lacrosse coach Barbara Erickson was on hand to cheer on Somerset Hills in the final game, and offered some words of encouragement for the team, she said.

This season, including these two tournaments, the team is 14-3.

The inaugural Ridge Classic (formerly the Brick Classic) was co-sponsored by T3 Lacrosse and Somerset Hills Girls Lacrosse. The tournament was for girls in grades 3-8 and included town teams, recreational teams and travel teams. Five teams from Somerset Hills Girls Lacrosse were slated to play in addition to two other teams including local players, DeWitt said. Teams came from Long Hill Township and other teams from nearby or further away, she said.
