Immaculata Defeats Ridge Red Devils 21-14

Spartans took lead for good in the fourth quarter; game to be replayed Saturday.

The Ridge High School football team fought hard through the final seconds of Friday night's much-heralded game against Immaculata High School, but an incomplete pass in the end zone secured the Spartans' 21-14 win in a game televised live on MSG Varsity.

Immaculata jumped ahead to break a 14-14 tie on the first play of the fourth quarter. Ridge's defense forced a late fumble in the final quarter, but the Red Devils were unable to capitalize.

Senior running back Anthony Milito scored both touchdowns for Ridge.

With 38 seconds left in the second quarter, a 35-yard pass from quarterback Jeff Helmes to tight end Anthony Domenick set up Milito's second touchdown on a 7-yard run to knot the score at 14 at halftime.

Ishmil Mack had scored two touchdowns for Immaculata during the second quarter to give the Spartans a 14-7 lead. Mack ran two yards for one touchdown and 42 yards for the second.

Ridge opened the scoring in the first quarter on a Milito touchdown run. Brad Heshmaty gave the Red Devils good field position with an interception on Immaculata's 47-yard line.

Prior to the game, Helmes's sister, Alison, said her entire family was in the stands to cheer on her brother. She said she didn't believe her brother was nervous prior to the big game. "He's been playing since he's 6," she said.

Excitement ran high at Friday night's season-opener, televised live in high definition on Cablevision's MSG Varsity.

"We are excited to kick-off our Friday Night Football series at Ridge High School," Michael Lardner, executive producer and senior vice president, programming and production for MSG Varsity said Thursday in a statement to Patch.

"MSG Varsity covered last year's Ridge vs. Immaculata game, so we knew that this rivalry would be a fantastic match for the inaugural game."

More details to come. The game will be replayed on Cablevision's Channel 14 Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.
