Ridge Girls Soccer Win Moves Team to County Finals

Team wins match against Watchung Hills in penalty kicks.

Ridge High School varsity girls soccer continue their Somerset County tournament run, advancing to the final match next Saturday against Montgomery, after this Saturday's win over Watchung Hills in 3-1 penalty kicks to break a 1-1 tie.

After a scoreless first half, the Red Devils scored first in the  went ahead in the sixth minute of the second half with a goal by sophomore Keri Villano, assisted by freshman Erin Convery.

Watchung Hills equalized in the 19th minute after capitalizing on a direct kick just outside the 18-yard box.

After two scoreless overtimes, which included an almost-goal by Watchung cleared by Ridge defender Brittany Sheehan, the game went into a penalty kick shootout.

Ridge girls won the shootout, 3-1. Jenny Haskel, Nicole Bates and Alex Weyrauch finished their penalty kicks for Ridge, while senior goalkeeper Rachel Axt came up with two amazing saves to clinch the game for Ridge.

Ridge will meet Montgomery in the Somerset County finals at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Manville High School. The time was later moved to 5 p.m. on Saturday, according to Ridge Athletic Director Rich Shello.
