They did it.

The Ridge Red Devils, for the first time in a decade, won their highest level in the state championships, taking the Group 5, North 2 title with a runaway win over their rival team, the Union Farmers, by lunchtime on Sunday.

The Red Devils ended the game at Rutgers Stadium with a socre of 48-13, having consistently logged touchdowns through all four quarters.

The first TD of the game was scored by senior Thomas Chiriaco, and was followed with trips over the goal line by four other players.

This fall's team now ends the year with an unblemished 12-0 record.

The last time Ridge took the title was ten years ago. "Ridge won this game in 2003 — in fact, we had a 10-year anniversary gathering for those guys the night we played Somerville," coach Bill Tracy said in an email on Thursday.

Ridge Fans pack Rutgers stadium

The morning game kicked off at Rutgers University's stadium, which was packed with Ridge fans who had made the trip south despite dire weather predictions that never materialized. Many brought homemade banners and flags to cheer on the home team.

The Red Devils also displayed teamwork between a group of players that had been together in the varsity ranks for the last few years, with some playing together since middle school.
