Ridge Youth Sports Scholarship Honors Late Fred Carpenter

Scholarship award for local children established in honor of longtime resident.

The Board of Ridge Youth Sports Inc. has established a memorial scholarship for local children to honor the late Fred Carpenter, a longtime resident and World War II veteran, who passed away last year.

The board also wanted to recognize the support that Fred Carpenter's son, John Carpenter, has given the organization over the years, said Board Member Bob Skea.

Ridge Youth Sports Chairman Steve Mueller unveiled the RYSI Scholarship award with John Carpenter.

According to the Ridge Youth Sports board, Fred Carpenter was a private and strong family man, who represented all of the important characteristics of this award. He had lived in the township for 42 years, according to the plaque presented to his son.

Scholarships are provided to children of families facing financial hardship that participate in an RYSI sport, according to the board. This year's recipient received the award for the football program, Skea said.
